Johan Brenes Horstik Obituary Cary NC Death:- Johan Marco Horstik Brenes, 12, of Cary, North Carolina, passed away tragically on March 21, 2025. Born on August 27, 2012, in Boston, Johan was the cherished son of Max and Marika Brenes and the beloved older brother of Eloisa and Laurel.
A seventh-grader at Alston Ridge Middle School, Johan radiated joy, kindness, and a contagious zest for life. His mama called him her sunshine, and to his little sisters, he was everything. Johan’s passion for soccer ran deep. He played competitively for NCFC Classic in North Carolina and previously for JP Youth Soccer in Boston.
Known for his selflessness on and off the field, Johan uplifted teammates and friends alike, earning the nickname “the therapist” among classmates for his empathy and emotional support. He also had a creative, entrepreneurial spirit and a natural ability to connect with people of all ages.
Johan shared a strong bond with his parents—he and his mom shared laughter, dance, and travel; with his dad, soccer was a shared passion, especially cheering for La Liga Deportiva Alajuelense and Arsenal.
Music, particularly rap, was another love that added energy to his vibrant personality. He treasured animals, especially his dog, Mr. Darcy, and cats, Lizzy and Rosie. Johan also held close memories of trips to Costa Rica, Finland, Michigan, and Universal Studios, along with time spent at Carolina beaches and Great Wolf Lodge with friends and family.
His love of food matched his love of life—he delighted in burritos, ribs, spicy chips, and Costa Rican cuisine. Johan was a devoted big brother, protector, and best friend to his sisters. He is survived by his grieving family, including parents, sisters, grandparents, extended family, and many friends. May his memory inspire kindness, joy, and fun in all who knew him.
